So im retaking a chemistry lab, and the labs are the exact same, except this teacher requires a few more sources. We have to turn in all our stuff to turnitin.com, so I'm not exactly trying to be sneaky or anything, but I plan on using a lot of the old stuff in my new labs. Of course, I'll change around numbers that are different from the lab, and add in stuff from the new sources, but other than that, it'll be about the same.

From what I understand, you CAN plagiarize yourself, but those circumstances are a little bit different...e.g., if i've done the same paper in two different classes or if i am writing a paper but including parts of an old speech or old paper in the new one.

If you're retaking the class... i'd try to learn something this time. Obviously your labs weren't good enough to get you past the class the first time... don't make the same mistake twice.

CAN you? That depends on the individual school and professor.
(be sure to provide the appropriate quotes if you do) :p

SHOULD you? That would depend on the grade you got on those papers the first time around...

No, you can't plagiarize yourself, so long as you own the document (ie: you haven't sold it to someone/relinquished rights/etc...). However, lots of schools have some bullshit in their handbooks about using the same work / paper or whatever for different classes equates to "academic dishonesty." You should check your schools rules and syllabus.

And yea, it's fucking bullshit.

I used to do it all the time in high school. Make a website with the information and use it as a reference. Just ensure it can't be linked to you. Private whois etc. The only tricky part is the registration date, they might see that as being suspicious. Most teachers probably don't even know how to check whois anyway.

I've seen it go both ways. i had to "drop" out for a semester due to my mom getting breast cancer. (just withdrew from classes) So when i went to retake one class ( a geology class) it was a different instructor. i asked him and he didnt care if i reused the lab info/sources. Just use the different data. The other teacher i had (for a world geography class) said nope it would be plagiary. But he also had a different format for the reports so i had to more or less rewrite them anyways. Ended up just reusing the same sources and it worked out in the end.

My suggestion....just ask the teacher.

You can absolutely plagiarize yourself. It's stupid, but true.
