Can I override the automatic mounting and unmounting of external storage devices in Windows?

To understand why I am asking my question, read here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=1086757&forumid=1

Basically my iPod is prematurely unmounting itself. But the iPod itself is fine, as is the firewird card (the iPod works with either firewire card on a different computer), therefore it is a windows or resource thing on my computer. But it only unmounts when something tries to access the drive. Can I manually mount and unmount the volumes without Windows XP doing it for me?

Pure speculation, which may do bad things... start->run services.msc, disable shell hardware notificiation?

as i don't have a windows ipod i am unsure if this will work, but look in the programs preferences/options/tools that is acting as the conduit between the ipod and the computer. i know on the mac i have it set to not to auto unmount. There should be an option to do this as one of the features of an ipod is to use it as a backup drive.
