I have a lot of data on the (only) partition c: on my HD. I want to reformat c: without losing most of my data. Can I make another partition on the same drive (and then have 2 partitions c: and d:) move data to d: and format c:. Will the OS installed on the freshly formated c: recognize the old data on d:? Thanks. I have critical data that I really can't afford to lose.

Yes you can. In fact, it's always a good idea to have more than one partition. The first which is just for the OS and some proggies and the other for the data. In this case, you just have to re-format the C: drive. Thing is, if the hard disk fails, then it's all the same unless you have 2 hard disks :D

you can't make another partition on your drive without losing all your data (unless, of course, you have partition magic...)

You might want to consider getting a second HD to use as a back up. You can store and copy over all your important stuff on it, if the data is that important to you.
