Can I move a pair of raid 0 HD's to a new system without reformatting them?

I want to move my HD's but wasn't sure if a reformat was going to be needed....does it matter if it changes from a Promise raid controller to a Via....

You might just have to try that one. Backup your data first. I bet it will as long as there are no software drivers (ie this is all hardware controlled).

I think you need a like chipset in order to transfer.... but then again I've never tried. Backing up before you try is always advisable, RAID array or not.

Anyone know? I'm curious too if this can be done.

I've always heard that you have to stay with the same RAID chipset and that makes perfect sense to me. I certainly wouldn't try it w/o making SURE I had a perfect file-by-file backup (drive image won't cut it) - JIC.
If the Promise RAID is a PCI card, I would move that to the new PC and just disable the on-board RAID - then you should be able to be confident of its working. But I still wouldn't do anything w/o a perfect backup as you plan to change mobos too, right? So there's the potential for failure there as well.

I have moved my raid-0 array 3 times, but it's always been to the same chipset. Moving to a controler with a differant chipset may or may not work, so I would just recomend backing up the data first, in case you do have to re-format.

I've done it quite a few times and a different chipset has called for a reformat...

Wouldn't a drive image of a RAID array work just fine on another setup, same chipset or not?
