A little more information would be helpful. Outside of looking stupid, I don't see why you couldn't orientate it any way you like.

Might look odd and the air flow for cooling may not work optimally.

Yamaha RX-V471 AV Receiver. Came with Yamaha Home Theater YHT-595 5.1 Home Theater in a Box. Set receiver on its left side so it is standing on its end.

Mounting it on it's side will block the venting slots on it's side so you should place some spacers between the receiver and the surface it's sitting on.

ANd make sure you have good clearances around the other sides.

If you are not going to actively cool it then i would not do it. They are designed to shed heat up as heat rises and all the engineering for cooling and heatsink placement was based on it being upright in the correct orientation.

That said if you throw a low speed fan in it i dont see you having any issues. But i would not do it without adding a fan.

Do not EVER put an amplifier on its side. Doing this can result in one channel being louder than the other. The reason for this is because the electrons flowing through the transformers will fall down to one side(due to gravity being flipped in the amps perspective). Pushing all of those electrons through one side of the transformer more than the other side can wear the copper wires out quicker ending with a result that is unsatisfactory even when the amp is turned back to its normal position. Very naughty to do what your asking..

The receiver does not have any vent slots on the left side.

But it does have them on the top and the warm air is designed to rise through them. If the right side becomes the top, all the heat from the amps and decoders needs to flow over all the rest of the components to escape, potentially causing it to overheat.

I would do it. unless you run your receiver at 3/4 load all the time, its not going to get that hot. if youre worried, add a fan,.. but I doubt you need it.
