I live in an apartment building and I use a d-link 614+ as an access point. I don't care if someone wants free internet access, I would just feel better knowing because I also use file sharing and remote desktop.

1. Put a Unique SSID

2. Disable Auto Broadcast.

3. Set to channel 11

4. Switch On the MAC Filter and enter the MACs of your system.

5. Set the WEP to 128bits.

6. Set the DHCP to the same number of computers that you have on your Network. (Example, you have 4 computers ser it to 101-104).

7. Install NetBEUI, and do the sharing through NetBEUI.

Link: Set NetBEUI as the Default Sharing Protocol in WinXP.

If you are extra worried change the WEP key every week.

D-Link stated that a WPA firmware upgrade will be available in the near future.

I don't know if dlink has any logging features but my linksys sends a log to my desktop. you could always sift through the outgoing log.

In apartment houses and similar setting if few people have Wireless, the wireless hardware log one into one into the other. This the nature of the hardware there is nothing you can do about it.

The same is with the broadband connection, some one or some thing is always "knocking at the gate"

I found out that constant looks at the Router's logs drive people crazy. They get paranoid and think that they are under constant attacks.

The constant attempts to connect to the system either by Wireless or broadband wire is part of the way the systems work. That is why it is important to reasonably seal the system.

jack,

I don't get it. You know all thats a waste of effort. Just change the key every 3 - 6 days. Everything else is just making your own live a PIA, it doesnt even slow a hacker down.

In away you are right. If some one tells me that I can use only one measure, I would go with 128Bit WEP changed every 3 days.

However this measure is the most uncomfortable measure since you actively have to deal with it every 3 days. The other measures you set and forget.

I believe that the ?Big American Way? is to let people know what is available and let them decide according to their needs and worries. Not every one is pursued by a professional hacker.
