Lets say I have a server with dual CPU support. Is it possible to upgrade one CPU at a time? ie would it be possible to match a xeon dual core with a xeon quad core?

It used to be true that they needed to be the same, down to the same S-spec even. Don't know how true that still is.

Can you, in some cases it MIGHT be possible (IE, they have the same clock speed, number of cores, and potentially even the same amount of cache, just different model numbers). However, I would never recommend it. There is just too much to go wrong.

It is possible to mix processors in some of the newer Socket F configurations, even putting a shanghai and a barcelona in the same board. Or at least it should be possible, according to the literature. It sounds like Intel does not offer that flexibility, however:(
