Can I mix-match RAM in dual channel mode?

I have an Abit IC7 (intel 875) mobo with a single 256 meg Geil Golden Dragon chip. It is rated at cl 2 and performs well. However, I can not seem to find a good deal on an identical chip to pair off in dual channel mode. I am on a very tight budget..

My question to you guys, is should I have problems mix-matching RAM, as long as they run as well as the weakest chip? I am thinking a bout getting a Geil "Ultra series" chip that is rated at the same timings. I'm not too picky about timings, I'd be pleased with stability at cl2 in dual channel mode.

Anyone have experience mix matching RAM?

Thanks,
Jared

Always try "search" . . . i recently asked the same question:\

Will Different BRANDSs of PC3500 work well TOgether in DC?

EDIT . . . i'll UPdate my thread tomorrow AFTER i TRY it (i should have it tomorow)

it PRObabLY will work IF the RAM is VERY similar (although it may well run it at the timings ofwhatever stick is slowest).

2nd EDIT -looking at your question, it is a bit different from mine . . . I ALREADY have a matched pair in DC and want to add ANOTHER different matched pair.

Our Abit ic7 MB manual says: "install DIMM modules of the same type and size. ;)

I'd try to get identical or it can get expensive IF it doesN'T work. ;)

I had 2X256 sticks of Geil Golden Dragon PC3200 (not the ultra) on my Abit NF7-S.
I added 1 stick of Kingston 512 Value Ram. The Geil is CAS 2.5 and the Kingston is CAS3, tried to boot at CAS 3 and no go. Went to CAS 2.5 and it runs fine. Couldn't tell you about O/C'ing ability though, haven't tried it.
