Can I merge Adress bar and Menu Bar in IE7 ?

I finally installed IE7. The only thing that I don't like is that a big part of the Menu Bar is empty. That would be a nice place to fit the contents of the Address Bar. Doing this would save the vertical height on one of the Bars

In IE6, it was possible to move things around from one Bar to another, so as to optimize space in the toolbars at the top. But in IE7, it doesn't seem this is possible. Unless someone can give me a trick to do this.

I don't want to hide the menu bar, and having to hit ALT to make it appear. I would rather have it visible at all times.

And although I don't have anything against Firefox, I prefer to use IE as my only browser.

afaik you can't do it. Torques me off a bit too. Like you I used to have them on the same row in IE6. It maximizes the browser window for viewing.

i thought i was the only one who cared about that feature.... i have IE, the Windows folders and Firefox set like that. it's great. i wish more programs allowed you to move their Toolbars up to the Menu bar.

I use IE7 Menumove - and it helps. There are quite a few ways to skin the cat:

Thanks guys,

Lots of things to look at. I will tell you if I manage to do what I want

nordloewelabs, If you have things set like this, is it with IE7 and how did you do it?

I have looked at all the above links and more, and it seems there is no solution to this. You can move the Menu at the top or hide the search box. And you can play hide-and-seek with the menu bar, using the ALT key. But you can't put the Menu on the same line as the Adress bar.

I found out I am not the only one to be annoyed by the frozen toolbars. From what I have seen, in its current form, IE7 toolbars can't be rearranged with the flexibility that IE6 had. This Google search shows people looking for a way to put adress bar and menu bar on the same line, without success.

No can do

Maybe in another revision of IE7, Microsoft will give us as much flexibility as we had in IE6

Avant uses the IE 7 engine. It's just a skin with some features added.

Here I've combined the search+address+buttons in one bar (with the menu bar above and the status bar under it) and selected the Compact Style mode to make the menu occupy the window title bar. There are many skins to choose from. You can also make your own skins.

If I select 'full desktop' under the View menu option, all the tool bars go into autohide mode and your browser occupies all your screen space, overlapping even over your task bar.

Thanks again dennilfloss for the heads-up on Avant Browser.

Although I am tempted to install it, the toolbar thing is annoying but not a deal breaker.

I prefer to stay with IE7 because I am playing the tech support guy for my parents' computer, which I have set up with exactly the same configuration as mine. It is very useful to be able to tell them what to do when we are looking at the same screen at both ends of the phone line.

Yesterday, I again had to show my father how to change the IE home page. So getting them used to a new browser is out of the question.

Let's hope that Microsoft improves toolbar options in a future revision of IE7
