Can I make SETI Run on NT Machines w/o Internet Access?

These machines are individuals - no hookup to the net. Do you know of any client I can install on these, have them crunch units, and later transfer the completed ones via floppy to another machine to upload?

well, you could get setidriver going on 1 computer, have it download a bunch of units, then sneakernet them over to the unconnected stations... course, thats bigger than a floppy. rc5 is a bit smaller, i think, so you can try that one

If a floppy is the largest removable media on the machine it could be a pain, zipping up the wu's would give 5 wu's/floppy. Dump them into a queueing program on the machine and run them, then periodically copy all the results to a floppy and dump them into the matching queueing program on a machine with net access to send them.

NIC's are real cheap, is there any way to slip in a NIC and plug them into a network?

If you just wanna keep it simple run the winnt cmd line client and sneaker the files to your net connected machine when finished. I did this for one of my boxes for a while when I needed it's NIC for something else. It was a K62 450 so it only did about 1 WU a day so it was pretty simple to just remember to do it as part of the morning routine.

If this is a faster machine capable of 3 or 4 units a day then you would definitely want to follow the advice above. You might be able to set up setidriver on the net connected machine but only use it to transfer results.

I haven't tried this myself, but if you set up seti driver on the lone machines then load in several WU's and let it run till all are finished, then sneaker the directories over to the connected machine.

I would try setting up the seti driver on the connected machine with (for instance) a cache of 6 WU's and also the lone machine with the same set up. Then after you download the 6 WU's turn seti driver off and zip up the Work dirs and copy to floppy.
Then take them to the lone machine and copy from floppy, unzip to the Seti Driver work dirs and then start seti driver.

You may also have to copy over the files in the seti driver directory to keep the machines in sync. As I said, I haven't tried this but it 'should' work.

I applaud your efforts to asslaminate more machines for the effort! Good luck, please report if and how you get this going and what speed / how many machines you are adding.

One other alternative you could use is a Zip Drive (if you have one). Even a Zip 100 will hold quite a few results... and by installing and using the "guest" utility, you can just pop it on and move it around whereever you need it (and even upload/download using it like a normal drive).

So i have a usb zip drive, i can download the cli and setidriver to it, set my cache, take the zip drive to my work computer-without a net connection, crunch the wu's from the zip drive, take home finished wu's and upload. yes-no.

Jalapeno; Have you already tried the zip on the NT box?
If it's NT4 good luck on both, usb and zip that is.

First, thanks for all the input guys! 😀

Wiz, no I haven't tried it yet. I'll probably do it tomorrow or over the weekend... And yes, it is NT4. Why do you say "good luck"?

USB is flakey on NT4, if it exists (not sure about that...). i know zip drives are a bit flakey anyway... sooo... you can always try it.

ElFenix answered right. You can always use a floppy. Don't think something is wrong with you if you can't get a usb zip drive to work on NT4 - the OS isn't friendly enough with that hardware. Hey, you might luck out - so give it a try!

Shame about the USB deal and NT. I have a parallel port Zip 250 (which also comes with a printer pass-through) that works fine with NT.

Just gave the suggestion so that you could investigate an alternate way to leave the machine to crunch much longer before being required to sneeker-net...
