Can I make my own p4 pin adaptor?

My dell 400sc power supply died. I have a 300W power supply but it does not have a p4 pin connector. Well can I remove the old p4 pin off the dell power supply and splice it with a y adaptor?

The p4 connecotr has 2 black wires and 2 yellows. The y adpator that I want to splice it with has 2 black wires and 2 red. has anyone here done this b4.

Thanks

Yes, you can do this. Your only concern would be if the rail is providing enough on the +12V to sustain the power required on that 4p connector. And I haven't done that exactly, but I have the 8pin (same thing as the 4p, but server version) powering 3 fans. I also have the 24p connector power fans and UV cold cathode lights.

IT can be done, it is simply 2 12V wires and 2 ground wires going to the mobo. NOTE WHEN ATTEMPTING THIS!!:

(From Power Supply)
Yellow = +12V
Red = +5V

You don't want 5V fed to your motherabord.

Make sure that you find the red wire on your "Y" adapter that will make contact with the yellow wire in your 4 pin molex connector from your power supply.

Also note: This procedure is not the smartest thing to do. Even if done carefully, it can cause electrical shorts, if not insulated properly where spliced, if the PS is too weak to feed the motherboard you could damage hardware. Also rudimentary electrical rigging such as hand twisting wire together and such can cause voltage & amperage fluxuations that are not generally healthy for sensitive computer components.

If your PS doesn't have this connector, its probably fairly old, and my recommendation is to just buy the right tool for the job in the first place. Decent PS's can be had fairly cheaply.

I was going to buy a power supply but i have a dell machine. and the only power supply that work with it are the ones that are oem compatible and do not have a switch on the back of it. after searching newegg i found a sparkle that might work but it is 60 bucks. And i bought the whole system for 200.00. (DELL 400sc)

Also for splicing i was going to use some butt connectors.

Well, If you gotta do it, go for it. Just exercise extreme caution, and don't cut any corners splicing. Butt connectors are a good idea, but I"d still even tape those up. Also when you clip the sires, stagger the cuts... cut one wire in one place, cut another an inch above or below the last cut, cut the next wire at a different length and so on.. THis give a much lesser chance of something touching and giving you some unwanted case mod lighting 😉

Actually my mobo came with such an adapter which connects to a regular molex. Yes, you can do it. I have it running on my daughter's 300W PSU.

You can get one for MUCH less than that eBay ad. The price is normally $1.99 all you need to do is find the place with the cheapest shipping. Or you could make your own with parts from places like http://www.jab-tech.com .
