Wanted to mail a laptop to UK.

Has anyone mailed any electronic goods before to UK? Do they charge any customs duty? If so, do they collect it when they deliver the item or do they expect you to collect the item from them? (I was planning to mail it by Global Express, no point if its going to sit in the customs office!)

How much do these customs duties come up to ? Is it a percentage of the invoice value?

Any suggestions?

I've had some things mailed to me from the US. Nothing as valuable as a laptop, just some processors and memory on a few occasions. I have found that if you mark it as "Merchandise", we'll have to pay over here (i had to pay £9.98 on a pair of processors valued at about $40!), but the ones i've had sent through as "Gift" have been OK.

Tho that's only been for small packages/boxes, not sure what would happen with something as big, heavy and expensive as a laptop.

Does Holland count?

I helped a friend over here order a laptop from dell, they shipped it to his dad in miami, and then his dad shipped it here via UPS.

I dont believe there were custom duties at all.

Careful Careful Careful about taxes! My mom shipped me a box of burned CDs, a HS Visor, and some candy. She overvalued everything to a total of $350. I had to pay $160 in customs taxes for STUFF THAT BELONGED TO ME! Check to see how much you can ship, but you probably will get nailed for taxes......

My friend who shipped hockey equiptment through some canadian freight company, had to pay customs/taxes when he picked it up at the airport. My other friend though, who shipped his laptop through UPS, didnt have to pay a penny. I wonder why its different...
