I was just wondering. I have an old copy of HL1 that I just found and was thinking of playing through for fun, but it would be nice to just use Steam to get it loaded and patched etc.

Is this possible? I noticed that they would like to sell it to me for $6.95, which I think is a bit much for a 1998 game.

You could have already tried it in the time it took to post that :)

It worked for me but I had some GOTY edition.

Yes.

Find the serial number/activation key on your game.

In Steam, on the bottom left it says "+ Add a Game". Click on that, then click "Activate a product on Steam". From there follow the steps and enter in the number from your hard copy. Congrats, Half Life is now activated, along with a few bonuses (Blue Shift and Opposing Force I think).

Yep. I added my launch day copy of HL1 on Steam a year or so ago. The great thing about it too is that they give you both of the expansions as well. This is one of the things I love about Valve.
