Can I just use a dedicated computer and a PCI 802.11b card as a WAP?

I was looking at one of those all-in-one router/wap combo's, but I wasnt sure exactly what I wanted now, and what I might want in the future, so it occured to me, can you just use a regular card and a dedicated computer to act as the WAP? Will it have poorer range?

Two Wireless cards can converse adequately. Most cards? software let you choose between Infra Structure, and Ad-Hoc Mode.

Infrastructure = Card to Access Point.

Ad-Hoc = Card to Card.

In case of Internet sharing with a Router, Ad-hoc (card to card) will drop the receiving card out of the Sharing loop, and additional Nat software will be required.[/]

Price wise you can get "El Cheappos" PCMCIA cards offered for $50 or less.

However, to put a Wireless Client Card into the Desktop, you need either a PCMCIA card with PCI Adaptor ($40), or a USB client Card. Either of these cards has to of good quality to maintain a reliable connection.

I today?s market prices, most of this type of ?creative solution end up saving $20-$30, and usually result with a un efficient system.
