Can I Install XP x64 & XP Pro Together?

Hi,

I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 Dual Core CPU and have just purchased Windows XP x64 Edition. I also have a licenced version of Windows XP Pro. Can I install them both together?

I have been told that some programs don't work on XP x64 and so would like to know if I can install XP Pro so as to use any programs that don't work on XP x64.

I don't see why not. As long as it's a separately installed OS for multi-boot, one will not affect the other, since you can't have both running at once. Just like how you can multi-boot with Linux, too.

I'm running Server 2003 x64, XP x64, MCE 05 (which is 32-bit XP SP2), 2000 Server, and a few flavors of UNIX on my X2 4400+ system (SN25P). I had the first offering of Vista x64 installed, but I didn't like what it did to my nicely arranged boot order. I have yet to get my hands on the recent beta in 64-bit (I only have the 32-bit, 🙁).

I can only recommend that you *NOT* install the OSes on the same partition (i.e., dedicate drive space to each, even if you have to give them separate drive letters). The install order should be oldest to newest. In your case, put on the 32-bit XP before the 64-bit release.

Thanx for that. How do I create a multi-boot?
It should happen automatically when you install the second OS. But it would be wise to make a backup of Boot.ini so if it doesn't make the entry for the original OS, you can copy the line into it.

so what kinda programs can you not use with x64? i thought about getting that OS but now that your telling me that i use use some progs, i might have to rethink it.

I think it's the same problem as when XP Pro first came out. I tried to run some programs and games on it such as the super game, Pharaoh, but it wouldn't work on XP.

In about a year or two, I am sure that 99.99% of programs will work on it.

Depends on how you define better. Without 64-bit apps, there's very little benefit to running XP 64. You'll also have to contend with drivers that are far less mature than their 32-bit counterparts.
