Vista isn't XP.

nevbie, you may run into problems, but otherwise your chipset should support installing SP2 from a SATA optical drive. If you have an earlier release of XP, you'll need to slipstream a new install disc.

One problem is if the BIOS is set to RAID...I don't think you can install any flavor of XP with this config.

Ditto to this. As long as he's set up for normal/IDE emulation mode he'll be fine. AHCI and RAID will not work unless he has the drivers already slipstreamed on to the disc.

I did this last weekend with no problems. I was using an ECS motherboard (nforce7050M-M).

Edit: I installed XP Pro.

Umm... Negative and Negative.

I had no trouble at all installing XP Pro x64 on my last build. The only thing that was a minor PITA is that XP required RAID drivers loaded via floppy (you know, press F6 and all that...) so I had to dig up a floppy and momentarily rob a FDD out of an arcane box I had sitting in the storage shed. The rest was cake.

IP35 Pro Mobo (Bios set to RAID)
2x Seagate Barracuda (SATA-RAID0)
Asus DVD-RW (SATA)

ditto...I have done many installs of xp pro with IP35 based boards...mind you I slippstreamed the drivers etc..so no need for the archaic floppy drive.

AFAIK as long as your Motherboard recognizes the drive as a boot drive Win XP would install.

When done there might be few Ghosts in the Device Manger, but that should be taken care by getting the updated Drivers.
