Can I install Win95 right over Win 3.1?

I have an old PC that still has Win 3.1 on it. I would like to give this PC away to my very young nieces but I would at least put Win95 on it?

Will I be able to install Win95 right over Win3.1?

Thanks and happy holidays,rnmcd

That's the whole idea of the Windows 95 upgrade product. 🙂 I assume a full install disc will also do the trick.

I have the Win95 software on CD but the old PC only has a 3.5" drive.

Is there anyway (besides hooking up a CD-ROM to the old PC) that I can get WIN95 onto the old PC?

Can I copy the CD onto diskettes or are the files(on the CD) all too large to get onto a 1.4mb diskette?

well, depends, if there is enough space on the HDD, you plug the old HDD to your current computer, and fdisk and format from there... then you can copy over the installation files onto the old HDD. the setup files require like 150 MB of space or something. Then you can install from the HDD once you put the old HDD back to the old computer.

well, as for the size of the files, check yourself, you'll need a lot of disks ;-)

I would not reccomend upgrading. Suggest reformat and new install.

On the other hand what good is a computer without cd rom to young children. Most all software is on CD.

LOL, installing Windows95 off 1,44MB disks! ROFL
And when your at the last disk:
ERROR: can't read drive A:
or something. Hehe.

You can install 95 off floppies. I have done it alot, or did, years ago. Its tedious, there are about 17 you need, usually, and it takes a long time... I never got a floppy error, ever. However, I would recommend erasing the hard disk and reformatting, as well as installing a cdrom...the computer will be largely useless otherwise, in spite of what you might think.

You folks are right. There's very little point in me upgrading this ancient PC.

Mday mentioned that it takes about 150megs to install Win95...the old PC has only 140megs!!

Do you think it is possible for me to build a decent PC for under $400 (not including monitor)? This PC would be a first PC for two under ten-years-old nieces. I am quite sure they won't need a high end system.

It's a bad word around here, but I'll say it anyway: emachines

They always have a $400 system after rebate and they now come with winME and some basic software. It's a cheap and simple computer that would work fine for you. Some people say that they break down a lot, but I actually have one and it never has died on me. I've had mine for over a year and a half. My buisness buys them too and none have died yet.

Definitely you could build a Celeron system under $400, check the hot deals and for sale forums here, there are some great deals.

Since I assume your nieces would not be running any hardcore games or programs, they probably would not require a very powerful machine... you can probably find a used decent PII or something for around $400... That should be more than enough for them...
