Can I install Win XP from Dell on a non Dell computer

Hey, I just bought an unused, unregistered copy of Windows XP on the for sale forum, only thing is I didn't know it was a Dell backup version, I got it for a friend, and he has a custom built, non Dell computer. Does anyone know if I will be able to install this on a non dell system, or did I completely screw myself?

If it's a system recovery version you may have some trouble. It might involve copying the i386 folder off of it and installing from there or something.

Legalities are another issue: What you are trying to do is against the law. OEM Versions have to remain with the original hardware. Product activation might stop you if your morals don't. 😀 Good luck!

I'm pretty sure the XP that comes w/ Dell CDs is somehow tied to the BIOS and/or hardware of the system

If you format your hard drive on the Dell and install the XP that came with it, you don't have to enter a CD key or activate it, so i'm pretty sure it's a special version just for Dell

You can try. If it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. Their is not much more you can do about it.

Oh and be sure to yell at the guy who sold it to you for not telling you it was not a legitiment copy of XP and was a OEM disk. If it works is besides the point, if it being a OEM disk is a non-issue then why didn't he come out and say it in the first place?
