I know you can upgrade, but I am wondering if I can install Windows XP over my current windows XP install. The reason I ask is that I am actually running what I will slyly call a corporate install of XP. I do own, and have always owned, a legit copy of XP. I just never felt like dealing with product activation. But from what I understand its really not that big of a deal. Now I have not been able to get SP2 due to this, plus I hear MS may stop allowing for anything but critical updates to people with illegal copies of the OS. SO basically I want to get legit. But I don't really feel like having to back up everything, reinstall all my software, and all that junk. SO is it possible to just do an upgrade or something that doesn't require a fresh start?

You can do a repair install using your own legit copy of XP. During the install you'll be asked to insert the relevant Windows key so make sure you have the key to hand.
A repair install should leave your programs and data unaffected.

yes, BUT, actually the first repair install option you want to skip / say no and windows will see the OS in place and ask if you if want to repair the existing OS and keep all your files and settings / say YES,and it will repair the OS and keep all your programs / files / and settings.

otherwise the first option of a repair install will wipe all your files / settings / and programs, programs will be there {in folders} but not available to the OS.

A direct installation over c:\windows has been known to work (I did it once before I had any concept of how to install windows and it ran for probably about a year).

But of course, follow the instructions of the good people here who know what they are talking about :)
