Can I install a new boot HD and use my current HD as a secondary drive without reformatting?

IOW, can I load XP onto a new SATA drive and install my current HD (which is IDE) as a secondary drive without reformatting it? Once I'm up and running can I simply delete program and windows files from the secondary HD?

I'm working with a new barebones case/mobo/cpu/ram outfit.
