Can I install a compaq windows xp on custom built?

Just making sure before i make a purchase. its never been used but from compaq, will it display a logo on the screen or anything?
 
I may work, but it's not legal.

If you report who your buying this from Microsoft may give you a license for free, so that may be a way to go about getting a Windows license.

Buy a retail license. It's not that expensive, it's legal, and you can install it on the next computer you build instead of having to buy another OEM license. If you want to buy a OEM license buy it for a computer your building from a reputable retailer that isn't trying to rip you off.
