can i install a 64bit OS in vmware with the host OS being 32 bit but host pc on 64 bit hardware?

host pc - intel c2q 9400.
host os - winXP 32 bit.
want to install vista 64 bit.

will this work?

and just extra curiosity, would it work if host OS and hardware was 32 bit?

I know virtual box won't do it, I believe the host has to be 64 bit in order to do a guest 64 bit OS.

I believe VMware is the only virt software to do it so far, you also have to have VT enabled in your BIOS for it to work.

In theory, the latest version of Bochs should do it. Bochs runs entirely by emulation, so if it were compiled for PowerPC, it would work just as well. This also means it will run very slowly, because it has to emulate all the instructions; but none of those instructions are accessible from your 32-bit OS anyway.

It works, I am installing Win2k3 x64 in Workstation 6.5 right now on my XP 32bit system. Make sure you have VT enabled in the BIOS.
