Can I increase protection?

I have a tall comcast xfinity router and occasionally use the wireless on another computer but that one has nothing personal on it. Is there hardware I can insert between my comcast and my computer for more protection or is software a better option? My knowledge in this area is 0. Thank you for any help.

Millions use securely Wireless with Wireless Routers (your device is a Wireless Router/Modem).

If secured with the Wireless Router with WPA-2 it is safe.

The easiest would be a router. Routers use SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) so this helpful protecting inbound traffic connection attempts. You should know that your modem ha s asome what built in firewall already. Enter 10.0.0.1 into the address bar of your browser. User is Admin and password is blank if I can remember right.

Now for the more sophisticated approach would be to run a mini ITX computer with Sophos firewall. Sophos has a forum. So if you decide to go that route check out their forums.

BTW, if you use WIFI, use WPA2 AES only. Don't use TKIP.

Thank you. I cant get into the xfinity with empty password. I actually understand the Sophos thing, its very interesting. I may try the router route since it looks easy.
