I have a Hardwired home network, Multi computers hooked to a gateway router acessing the net via Cable connection. I have an extra computer right now that isnt being used. I want to be able to just allow several family member to play. I know nothing about what or how to set it up and I dont want to invest the time it will take if it wont work with what I have. My computer is flexible since I have extra components, basics are XP 2.3gig,1gig+ Ram,NF2 board,64mb Radeon vid. Closest thing I have done to this is playing on my LAN and hosting the game from the same box I am playing on, then my wife and kid join in. I also assume since the game would be playing on my LAN my PING wil be about NIL will I have an unfair advantage or will I be able to play competively. Well you get the idea PLEASE if someone has tried this before or if you have knowlege about these thing LMK if it is worth the hassle.

TIA
Charlie

you really wont need that dedicated server for 3 people. just start ut on the best computer in the house (processor and ram wise), then create a listen server, which is a server that you can play on at the same time, and people can join on lan no problem.

Port fowarding is done by telnetting your router and configuring certian ports to be open to up and down traffic, I know that has to be done, I guess my big question is will my cable connection by fast and large enough to allow other to play in the same game running on the server at my location? I will have to figure out the setting up of a dedicated server which will be accessed from the internet. I guess somewhere some type of security would need to also be involved.

ok, i just figured it out

first of all, for the server, i assume you just click dedicated instead of listen. second of all, to do the port forwarding, you typie "192.168.1.254" into your web browser. then you should find an option for virtual network or something, where you put in udp, single port:7777, and your local ip, then click add (this is what i had to do, i assume it varies by router) now people should be able to connect by ip (www.whatismyip.com) with ":7777" attatched to the end or through the server browser (not recomended). i have an issue of maximum pc with me that says you need 740kbps upload for 16 people in ut 2k3, so you need about half that. enjoy!
