Can i hook up a rehostat to my HSF fan?

can i and SHOULD i hook one up to my fan on my HSF, its a loud fan.....

it would be great to turn down while i'm just in windows screwing around.... and when i play some quake 3, crank up all fans

I am thinking of hooking up a 100 ohm 5 wat rheostat to all of my fans, then just turn them down while on idle.....

and then just in case it gets warm, i have the bios shut down if it gets above 60 degrees or something.......

1.4ghz t-bird... with epox 8k7a mobo

Confusious say: He who put potentiameter on HSF should be very carefulllll. For if potentiameter go bad, it go open.
