Can I hook my laptop to my desktop and share wifi?

My laptop has wifi, my desktop does not. I see that I can share the wifi through LAN, but do I still need a crossover cable or does the newer gigabit LAN ports do auto mdi-x ?

err yeah you are gonna need a null modem or switch, no auto cross on laptops.

Yeah they do, that is part of the Giga Standard.

No crossover cable is needed if the NIC is from the last 10 years.

Gigabit uses ALL four pairs in a cable, hence gigabit interfaces use auto-mdix

To the OP - why don't you just get either a usb wifi card or a PCI-E wifi card? Make it easier on yourself.

Saw a nice Asus card, went to the store to buy it...don't stock it. Ordering will only take 10 days....retail is becoming pointless. :\

So just connect the ethernet cable between the computers and see if it works.
