Can I have your honest opinion -- Academic situation

Nocturnal

I attend a community college and I currently have a 1.0 GPA. I have 9 credits to my name. I needed to get a 2.0 or better this past semester, otherwise I would get suspended. Obviously, I got suspended. I was also diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder from my psychiatrist. My school sent me a letter saying I was suspended and what options I had. The two options I had were, appeal in writing why I did so poorly and why I should be accepted back. Or, sit a semester out and then appeal in writing to see if I could get back in.

I decided to appeal with the chances of starting school this coming Monday. In the letter of appeal I also included a written document from my psychiatrist stating that I was currently being treated for Attention Deficit Disorder. I was only diangosed with ADD roughly a month and a half left into the Fall semester. At that point, I was put on medication and towards the end of the semester I did not bad, thus bringing my grades up from Fs to Ds.

What I want to know is ADD something that they would let me back for? Or, would they just tell me tough luck you got the bad grades...

I pay for my own school, nobody pays for it. I am the one at fault for not doing well. No one else to blame. I pay for EVERYTHING so please no bitch posts about me wasting people's money and whatever. Also, I don't care if you don't think ADD is a real disorder. I just want your humble opinion on whether or not I will be accepted to return this semester/Monday.

What do you think?

I'm not sure what the school policy is on disorders like that. Maybe they will make an exception for you, but I'm not sure. Can you talk to a conselor? Good luck man. 🙂

Since you can get a letter explaining the diagnosis and showing you're taking medication I'd say you have a good case.

The only reason why you might want to wait is to make sure you have good control over your problem, that your dosage is correct and any therapy / training is going well. If you are still learning to cope with your ADD it might be a waste of time and money to try to take another class right away.

CCs are very easy to get into compared to many 4 year programs. You should have no problem getting in there or many other institutions. While schools try to strive for excellence, they also strive for attendence. They ARE in it for money.... I know because I work for one. 😀

True, are you a doctor or do you have experience with ADD as well? You seem knowledgable.

Can i seriously ack how you manager to get a 1.0 at CC? most of my friend that go to CC sleep through their classes and at least get C's

And as for your question. YES submitting teh appeal is a good idea with teh documentation from the Doc of your ADD problim. weather or not they will do anythging about it is totally up to them. but its worth the shot

What exactly is Attention Deficit Disorder? Is it like you can't keep attention on whatever that's going on? And why exactly did you almost fail your classes?

I think you should write a letter explaining why you did so poorly and that this semester will be a turn around since you do not want to be kicked out. I'm not sure how they'll handle your disorder if you do mention it. If you're confident in your letter saying you'll not allow this disorder to get in your way of education, I can't see why they'll not let you back in. Maybe you should go talk to your college counselors to get it sorted out on top of writing an appeal.

Yeah, ADD is like I just can't do my homework. I can't do my work at all. I'll be at home and I'll just lose interest and I'll go do something else. Or I'll come here to Anandtech Forums and post away. You can search google.com and there are a lot of sites with clearer explinations.

You should be able to get some recognition for the ADD diagnosis, but don't count on it. Once again, schools are in it for the money and they'll just put you in remedial corses until your GPA rises. I would appeal to the office that deals with disabilities... At my university we have a disabilities office and a CAP office (College Access Program). See what services they have to offer you...

Nope, just relentlessly logical and possessed of a high level of smartness like Mr. DessertCart 😉 🙂

I hope you do get control of your ADD. College can actually be fun if you're learning a subject that you enjoy (and you're able to study).
