Wrap it up good on the outside. We have one installed and do that every fall. NE USA

I always leave mine installed. But I clean it off really good with a waterhose about 4 times a year. It pays to keep the coils clean.

If you were in an area of severe cold, ice, and snow...I could see that covering the unit would be beneficial to keep ice from expanding, but you should actually run the unit once a month to keep the compressor oiled and working properly. If not, the tubes may get pinholes in them.

I guess your talking about a window unit. And yes you can leave them in the window year round, but in the winter unless they are really wrapped and sealed well it can let a lot of warm air escape and/or cause a cold draft

I just take them out every fall. I don't find it that hard to not do it.

Plus in my room there are 2 windows and if I want it cool at night I need both windows open so thats another reason I take them out.
