I've got it bad. I've been sleeping all day and my dog just wouldn't stay away from me; So I'm just hoping I don't have anything to worry about.

I doubt it. Most illnesses that humans get don't affect animals and vice versa. Of course there are exceptions like rabies.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Even fleas and lice refuse to change host types.

Dunno what kind of cracked out fleas you've got around there, but the fleas around here will happily suck on any warm blooded body they can. :p

I'm unable to find anything on Google about it, so I'm betting no.

Apparently, ferrets can get human influenza though.. so stay away from your ferret if you have one. :p

There are "dog fleas" and "human fleas" as well as "bird fleas"

PIC

"Cat and dog fleas are very similar in appearance and both species can live on both cats and dogs. Humans are mainly attacked by cat fleas. A cat or dog may have a light infestation of fleas without the human inhabitants knowing it, but if the pets are carrying large numbers of fleas, then there is naturally a greater likelihood of humans being bitten."

Flu is a viral illness, but I haven't heard of it being spread to dogs. Here are a few viral illnesses shared by humans and animals:
West Nile
Ebola
Hanta virus
Yellow Fever
Avian flu (This one is a "flu," but as the name implies, it's shared by humans and birds.)

Yes, I have heard of avian flu. What about plague? :)

Not that it really concerns me. I mean, rats carry it, fleas spread it between rats and humans but can they also spread it to dogs?

"He gave me herpes, which I then gave to the dog. But that's neither here nor there."

I've been meaning to ask for a while...

That link above is a very good resource, however it describes something I've seen mentioned before: When an animal such as a pig which can be infected with human and animal forms of influenza does so, they say that a new "transgenic" strain can form. A ridiculous newspaper article I read early his year or late last year described the avian flu outbreak just before the SARS outbreak. It said that it traveled easily from birds to humans but not from human to human, but then said that it could "breed" with another virus which does spread from human to human and create a pandemic.

Umm, how can a genderless organism "breed?" They DID use that word. I'm sure they meant "transgenic shift" but how the heck could that work? I thought there was some "revolutionary" discovery a year or two ago when it was learned that Staph bacteria could swap genes. Why is it generally accepted without explanation? :)

One thing to watch out for with pets is that occasionally they can become a carrier for human ilnesses. They don't get sick but the virus/bacteria is in their system and they can get you sick. This is really only something to worry about if you keep getting sick over and over but you don't know why.

Hell my mom has shingles (chicken pox of the nerves in adults over 50) and the doc said the dog is safe from it... it's highly contagious the first couple of weeks too..
