Can I gift a game from a coupon code or will it automatically be mine?

I have never used the gifting feature on steam before so I'm not sure how it works exactly. Basically I bought an AMD graphics card and it came with a free Dirt 3 coupon code. I'm not interested in racing games so it would be a waste. I would rather gift it to someone else.

If I redeem the code through steam, will it be mine automatically or will I be given the option of gifting it? I don't want to redeem it then bam it's mine.

Thanks

There's 2 kinds of coupons essentially, the ones bundled with hardware and other external deals are usually just coupons that when activated bind the game to that specific steam account, so you'd need to send the actual coupon code/key to whoever you wanted to give the game to.

Then there's coupons which are actual virtual objects inside your steam inventory which are a more recent invention, these can be traded between people and anyone can redeem them.

Well I got 2 of them. When I opened the shipping box, there was a brown envelope with the one Dirt 3 code and the graphics card box which also included a Dirt 3 code. They both look exactly the same except with different codes.

So I guess they both are the ones that will bind when activated correct? So I have to give the actual codes to whoever I'm gonna give it to right?

You can gift the physical card it self, since it's needed to redeem the game key from AMD.

I understand now, thanks guys!

Would anyone be willing to trade for them? I'm looking for Total War: Shogun 2 & Gotham City Imposters.

Just don't sell the keys. You can get in trouble if you make a profit off of the "Free offer".

No worries I have no intention of selling them, just trading. I already put it up in the "Want/Have" thread in the "For Sale/Trade" forum

This made me lol. These codes get sold all the time.

Yep, they do. It is big business for little hardware shops that end up with dozens or hundreds of them when they build systems. Doesn't make it right. And yes, if you are caught, they have a legal right to come down on you.

So advertising that you are "Selling" something like this is really kind of dumb. hence my statement. :)
