Can I ghost from smaller to larger?

Is it possible to ghost an image onto a larger HDD? I need to switch HDDs (been using same 80GB drive for almost 5yrs) and I don't feel like doing a full re-install.

I will probably be using the free trial version of Acronis True Image, if that will do the trick.

Acronis TrueImage has no problems ghosting an image from a smaller drive to a larger. It even allows you to change the size of the partition as desired.

You could also use the free utility offered by the drive manufacturer.

I've used utilities offered by both Maxtor and WD. Both offered to scale partition sizes for smaller-to-larger drives.

Use the utility offered by the maker of the destination drive.

Hope this helps!

Ghost will do it also. I think some of the versions will ask if you want to resize the partition to that of the bigger drive.

I have used Ghost 7.0 to move from 40s to 60s with no problem.

You should be able to go both ways (either smaller drive to larger drive or larger drive to smaller drive if you have enough free space available) when using Ghost or any of the other software to make an image.

Ghost should span the image out to the end of the drive. Done it a million times.
