<< If you buy it from CompUSA you can get a 3year plan that covers everything but theft! >>

and...if you threw it off a cliff.

Yeah, you can. I'm not sure how much though, I didn't buy it for mine. It's good, because a lot of time your warrenty won't cover damage to your screen (which can be very expensive to replace.) I think if you already have homeowners insurance, sometimes that covers it too.

Yes. The premiums depend on the value of your laptop, what kind of coverage you want and what your deductible is.

I'm no insurance expert but I'd say you have two different options:
1) If you were to buy a BTO (built-to-order) laptop like Dell or Gateway they offer their own "covers all insurance". I know that Dell offers this and I believe it's $349 for 3 years and covers everything but theft.

2) Get special insurance from a company which specifically insures laptops or a general insurance company like State Farm, Allstate, Farmer's, etc.

It would be covered if you could somehow find the laptop afterwards.

I don't think you could get insurance to cover theft. I mean think of all the fraud that would happen.

Actually I think you can get insurance to cover theft.

I think this is what he is talking about. If he was talking about that crap that CompUSA and other places sell I think he would have said "Extended Warranty" since that is what it is.

I am only assuming that he is talking about insurance and not warranties.

Anyways, I would call up a place like Allstate or State Farm and see what they have for that. I am pretty sure they have something that will fit your needs.

You can definitely insure it against theft... sure, there's going to be fraud, but there's fraud in car insurance as well. Overall though, people that are insuring their notebooks aren't 18 yr old kids, but professionals who really wouldn't have that much to gain from fraud.

Most people are already covered against theft if they own their own place or have renter's insurance. My homeowner's insurance will cover anything that's in my car that gets stolen, for example. If it's installed in the car (like a DAT machine or CD player) then the car insurance policy covers it.

If you rent, please get renter's insurance! It scares me how many people neglect to get it! :Q

Cheers!

Like i said, i'm sure fraud does occur... but it's less likely. The trouble of filing a report (police report too), going through the paperwork, and having your insurance increased for that is just not worth it to most people. And there's just so many times you can do it.
