I have cable through RR and it sucks horribly. It frequently goes out completely or I get like 50% dropped packets. They have been out 3 times and each time they claim it is fixed, but it isnt. So, I think I am switching to DSL, probably the SBC 3mbps deal. I tried signing up online, but they require a phone number to activate service. We don't have a home phone since both my roomate and I just use our cell phones.

Basically...Can I get DSL without having a home phone?

no, absolutely not. There's no way around it. The answer is 100% no. <--------- note the period

Have you called and asked? But I think Yzzim is correct, they require it. That and a lot of the times the prices they give are only if you have a Phone Package deal setup.

I would also like to get JUST dsl, but I don't want to add another $25 or so just to havew the privlage to get DSL. So Cable is where it is at.

DSL is a digital signal piggybacked onto a normal phone line. Naturally, you can't have it if you don't have a phone line.

Do you mean you don't have a phone line installed or you don't have a home phone that you're using?

I could get DSL where I lived without having a home phone number - I still had a phone line installed that I just used for DSL.

I'm interested in this too. I currently have no landline but am interested in getting DSL. I mean, the physical wiring is there for a phone line, I just don't have actual service.

It was a local company called NetExpress. I didn't need phone service, just a phone line they could use for the DSL.

the answer is YES depending on the company, check into this DSL provider called advantex communications. they DO NOT need an active phone line to install DSL.

You need the physical line but not the landline phone service. However,SBC will insist to have you subsribing both, and would refuse to sell only DSL alone.

If you get DSL through a provider that uses a CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier, like Covad) as opposed to an ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, like SBC or Verizon), such as Speakeasy or any number of smaller ISPs, they will typically include a phone line as part of the installation/subscription price. You'd get a new line w/o number that is used for internet access only.

Check with the provider. I had to get an analog line with DSL. After the first bill, I called them and told them that I wouldn't be using the analog line. They reduced the price from the regular $25 or so, to $11 a month for the analog. If I were to use the analog, I think they told me I'd pay for each call - but we have two cells and a regular landline so I was happy with the reduced price since we have no use for the extra analog.

Some companies might, others wont. I think verizon doesnt. Your best bet is to call the company.

Depends on the provider. There are some which require you to have a phone connection as well, but some do not. At least around here.

I would also like to get JUST dsl, but I don't want to add another $25 or so just to havew the privlage to get DSL. So Cable is where it is at.

Does that mean that you can get cable internet without cable tv?

a lot of people at college did this since most people had cell phones.

as long as a line runs to your house, you do not need to have active phone service for dsl. just the wiring. you could get dsl without normal phone .

Yes, of course. Same principal.

In either case, the service frequencies you aren't paying for are simply blocked out and/or aren't connected in the first place.
