Can I get away with a 420w PSU

I ordered a thermaltake siler purpower 420w psu to go with my msi k8t neo-fis2r mobo, clawhammer 3400+ cpu, and leadtek 6800 128mb video card.
I've heard that this video card needs at least a 480w psu.
HELP!

The video card makers are touting their cards as requiring ridiculous power supplies because there are lots of n00bs out there with their 800 watt "ultra mega power" power supplies that push a total of 200 watts

Yeah--that rating assumes a generic PSU. It'll run on a quality 300-350 watt provided there's enough amperage on the appropriate rails (which is really what should be looked at, not just the wattage).

Ohms law anyone? If most folks bothered to check the specs on their psu, they'd find them (most often)
below advertised specs.

Course you can't blame the consumer. Manufacturers should be held more accountable.

I'm running:

Athlon 64 3000+
2 HDD
1 optical drive
9800 Pro
Modem
and all perihperials

On a 300Watt Enermax with 22A on the 12v rail. Just make sure its a quality PSU, and push the "total wattage" to the back of your mind.

I'm using the same PSU that you mentioned and running all the hardware items in my sig (see below) with it. From day one there has not been any random reboots, BSOD, runs, drips, or errors😀. I've been running it since this past July and recently I've been having a ball playing DOOM3 at ultra high settings (flashed my 9800 Pro to an 9800XT:cool😉.

Have fun with your system and game on!
