Can I get a used car for under $10k that's decent?

from my thread earlier this morning, transmission died on 97 chevy lumina and will cost $1700 to rebuild. the car has been wrecked before and the airbags are out (never fixed them because it cost too much, car was totaled) and so it's not worth this, its already got 120k miles on it.

name some cars i can look for...

I just bought a '84 Volvo. Only $400, and its got a turbo. Im gonna type R it sometime this week, +10 extra horsepower right there.

It absolutely depends on your definition of decent.

Go back a few years and pick up a Chevy Prizm...that would be extremely high on the decency per dollar scale - Text

We have a '98 Corolla that's well past 180k...should be able to find one for $3-4k.

Prizms are Corollas with a different skin.

Back in 2005, I sold my 2002 Grand Am for $7300. Had no problems, well taken care of, and 50,000 miles. Looking back, I sold it way less than it was worth but at the time I just wanted to cover what I owed on it and sell it since I had a new car.

You may be able to find similar deals on recent Grand Ams. They aren't bad cars if you don't mind a 4 cylinder.

Bought a 2004 Kia Optima a year ago for just over $10k. You should be able to find one now for less. Yes, it's a Kia, but it's worked fine for me, gets decent gas mileage, and has needed no maintenance work or anything else.

that's what I was going to say, I think my 2002 ZTS with everything but the upgraded sound and leather and only has 20k miles is like $9000, heck I think it was 14,500 new.

prizm's are built in GM factories in the US and most corolla's are built in toyota's ontario plant. has similar parts and looks but i wouldn't say prizm's ARE corolla's.

but yes you can get a decent car under $10k. plenty of last gen accord/camry to choose from. $10k should get you a fairly unabused 95-99 maxima as well... but you take the risk of buying an older car.

A new Kia Rio runs about 10k as well. If you just want an A to B car, you can't beat the 10yr/100k warranty.

Similar parts? Same engine/drivetrain..

2 cars having the same engine/drivetrain can be completely different cars. they are very similar cars, but as long as one is built by toyota and one is built by GM using toyota parts, i wouldn't consider them to be the same car.

but for OP's purpose, he can do a lot better than a prizm with $10k.

Sure he can -- $10k will do him quite nicely.

From my years on a Corolla board, I've heard that Prism/Corollas were nearly identical. Heck, even my old Haynes manual is for Corolla/Prism..
