I was working on a friend's computer, and as luck would have it, I happened to roll right over the official xp home sp1a disc as it slipped to the ground. it's in about 7 pieces right now. will MS hook me up with a new disc? all I have personally are xp pro discs :\

You should be able to use any copied disc as long as you still have your license key number I believe.

that's the problem. I don't know anyone who actually has an xp home disc lol. everyone I know uses xp pro.

Aquire a copy, and make sure you keep the original license and certificate with it. The license is for the software, not the media.

Regardless, I would not suggest downloading it.

It is quite possible that microsoft would replace the media for a nominal fee (conceivably even for free), but you should be fine with any copy, as long as you have the documentation to prove you own a license.

Call MS They have a record of you and your lisence if you registered. They will send you a replacement disk for a small shipping fee.
Have done it before

That depends on if it is an OEM or Retail disc. If it is Retail and Came in the box then MS should provide you with a new one. If it is OEM, then it is up to the Original OEM provider to support that product and MS will tell you to call them. If your OEM was Newegg or someone like them, then you might be out of luck. IF your OEM was DELL, IBM, HP, ETC then they will most likely send you a new disc. I have been through this before.

Agreed.

Forget the fee. Download a new copy off of bittorrent. Download a couple copies so you'll ensure you get at least one copy in a reasonable amount of tiime. Do yourself a favor and get a SP2 version. Make sure you use your current CD key so that M$ doesn't hose you on the next service pak release (which they do with popular pirated keys).
