Can I get a semi decent LP player for under a 100 US. Specifically one that will run through my PC?. I'm not opposed to buying used as long as it works.

why would you want to do that? It would be cheaper, better to torrent the mp3s...

Any one will run through your PC as long as you have a pre-amp box connected in between. They aren't expensive. Ones with full RIAA Equalization start at roughly $30.

Those USB turntables just have crap written all over them. They even feel cheap. Best to get a decent used on off eBay or Craigslist.

So from what I gather avoid USB, I need a pre-amp box, avoid cheap cartridges (not sure how to tell on that one), and used should be fine.

Well, not for $100....
I got a pretty nice Technics SL-1650 MK2 off the 'bay for $100.
Got a nice Grado cart for about $50. Already had a vintage receiver
with a phono pre-amp, but also purchased at different times vintage
Denon and Yamaha receivers for about $30 each.
So, less than $200 for a nice setup. Hard to do it for less.

They are out there. Granted not high end but gets good reviews.

Audio-Technica ATLP60 Belt-Drive Turntable $79.95 shipped from ZZound
With its built-in switchable phono preamp, the AT-LP60 may be connected directly to your computer, home stereo or even to other components that have no dedicated turntable input. The turntable is supplied with an integral Audio-Technica Dual Magnet phono cartridge with replaceable ATN3600L stylus.

I have an old, vintage 1970, direct drive Dual CS604 with a Shure VN15E cartridge connected to a JVC RX-884BK receiver. Still using them.

That may just work for me. I don't need immaculate high end anyways its getting played through a set of computer speakers anyways.

I'd say to find someone that's familiar with turntables in your area and have him/her help you out. Some of my best TT purchases were around $100 off of CL - a beautiful vintage Pioneer unit, a Thorens that needed work, an 80's HK, etc.

Have fun though, vinyl's a blast. And I'm jealous of that box set too...

i spend about 130 on my B&O 1900 off e-bay but did have to purchase a separate pre-amp and clean up the cartridge. I also have a new-er Yamaha receiver being used as a pre/pro and a vintage HK amp.
