Can I get 7.1 audio (hdmi out) from an evga 680

im just wondering if the card is capable of doing 7.1 audio with 3d or 1080p

See everytime I play a movie it says that its pcma or whatever audio format. Now I was hoping to use one of the better formats like truehd or dts audio 7.1. But my reciever isnt accepting that format in. At least it says its not. It always comes up as pcma or whatever

Your sig doesn't state your OS. What are you using? In the Nvidia control panel, make sure all the appropriate audio settings are what you would like them to be (I haven't used them in years, so no help here), but if using win7, go to audio devices and find the Nvidia HDMI device, set as default, and Configure as 7.1. In one of the tabs, there will be a box listing supported codecs. DTS-HD and TrueHD should be listed. If not, you may need to update both Nvidia and Intel chipset drivers.

you may also have to configure bitstreaming options in your video player software.

The HD audio on Video cards is only for passthrough meaning the soure (movie) must already have 5.1 or 7.1 or you'll get PCM 2.0. Try a movie with surround

I tried the hobbit.

I have windows 7 64 bit
I did configure under sound options in control panel for 7.1 surround
I changed the settings in powerdvd to i believe to 7.1

I had already did all this and it said pcm 7.1 when I brang up options with my reciever ( onkyo 616)

PCM 7.1 is just TrueHD or DTS-HS MA that has already been processed and decompressed prior to going to your receiver. The audio is exactly the same either way. The only difference is when you bitstream, your DAC in the receiver can do some processing effects.

In terms of the actual sound the engineer in the studio put on the disk, LPCM and DTS-HD MA will be sending the same information. The only difference is LPCM is uncompressed prior to being transferred over the HDMI.

The 680 can bitstream but I am having trouble finding out how to do it through a search. It's a software setting somewhere I am sure that will tell the player to not decompress the audio but rather send the signal bitstreamed. I'm going to install the HD Audio driver and try bitstreaming HDMI to my receiver and see if I can figure it out. If I get it I'll report back.

When playing a file that is DST-HD MA or Doly TruHD go to the software audio decoder properties and tick everything in the Pass through section displayed.

Close the video file and reopen it to apply changes. Report back with results

In power DVD this is what you look for. Send non decoded content is the option you want.

I don't know what playback program you are using but Windows media player has something similar.

Those with high end preamps like an Emotiva UMC-200 would probably rather have that device do the decoding as their DSPs are superior and each software or decoder can change the sound ever so slightly. That's really nitpicking as most people would have a hard time telling the difference. It's digital all the way to the final speaker output, but some receivers and processors have better sound because of the better components there's no way around that. Generally though LPCM and Bitstreaming offer the same information. Bitstreaming can simply allow the receiver to add some effects that might be preferable to some users.
