Can I force install of WinXP Home Upgrade?

So I just assembled my super cool computer and to find out WinXP Home Upgrade won't install because the harddrive didn't have a previous install of Windows. I worked around that by cloning a working harddisk onto my new drive and reinstalled WinXP Home Upgrade without a hitch. For future reference is there a way that I can keep the OS from checking up on me whether I had a previous install of Windows?

Assuming it's a clean install, an XP Upgrade disc should prompt you to insert the disc of a qualifying earlier version of Windows. Insert the disc, let setup verify it, then put the XP disc back and you're good to go. There's no need to install the old version of Windows first.
