I'm getting a P5B for xmas (can't wait) and I want to flash the bios but my floppy is broken. Can I boot to a cd instead?

Better - you can use the Asus EasyUpdate utility and update your bios right from WIndows.

Nice.

Yes you can.

You want to download a windows 98 CD boot image from www.bootdisk.com and use a cd burning program like Nero to create the disk. Make it multi session so you can add your flash program and bios.

Keep it handy! It's open session and you can add new BIOSes to it as needed.

EDIT: You will need to change the boot order in your BIOS to look for a CD BEFORE HDD otherwise it will just boot into Windows.

Nice.

How reliable is that now? I remember a while back when it created problems.

I've flashed my BIOS with EasyUpdate a few times now, a friend's computer using it and no bad flashes yet. I like it, much better than those floppies which I was certain would crap out on me in the middle of a flash and kill my BIOS.

You can also flash it from a folder on your hard drive, ea C:\Temp. I've done this many times and it works fine.

Also, you almost certainly have a used computer parts store locally where you can pick up a used floppy for a couple of bucks. I have one next door to my MicroCenter where I picked one up for about six bucks.

Then you have to worry about finding a floppy! and the 10 year old one that's sitting in the dusty corner of your computer drawer with a coffee stain on the label probably isn't the best idea! :) It just takes 1 bad sector...

flash CDs are a great option, and within Windows is fine as long as your system is stable and not filled with bloatware / malware. You don't want a BSOD or lockup when flashing the BIOS!!
