I have a Dell 2408wfp monitor, it's about 7 years old but it had been working fine and was adequate for my photography work and general PC office work and browsing.

About 6 months ago it started to go black for a few seconds and then come back, this happened maybe 1-2 times a month. Sometimes it would also not turn on when I rebooted the pc. I would turn the power button off then on and things were OK, this happened maybe 4 times over the last 6 months.

Today I rebooted the PC and the monitor stayed black. I could hear the Win7 audio signal so I knew the PC was running. Strange thing is the power button is yellow but it won't turn off. I can push it briefly or hold it but it doesn't turn on or off, just stays yellow. I tried unplugging and replugging the monitor but it didn't help.

I have an old Dell 1905 LCD monitor, I swapped them and everything looks OK, everything is running fine so it's definitely the monitor.

I did a youtube search and found a few videos showing bad solder joints or bad capacitors on monitors. Does anyone out there have experience with this kind of problem with a Dell 2408? I have terrribly shaky hands and don't have soldering equipment so I don't think I'm up to repairing but has anyone repaired a Dell monitor? Is it worth taking it to someone? I really don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a new monitor right now if I can replace a bad capacitor on the old one.

Any experience or advice would be welcome, thanks for your help.

Honestly, I would swap the DVI cable (assuming that's what you're using) with your other monitor and see if that resolves the issue. It's a great monitor, I would try that and then I'd try a VGA cable next to see if it's just the monitor input.

To reiterate:
1) Swap DVI cables to confirm cable is not at fault (cheap replacement)
2) If DVI cable not solving issue, try VGA cable/input
