Thanks

Hey, what's up Dan? (Yeah I'm sorry, this was OT. Hehe)

Let me know how BeOS is for you, spyder. I've been considering trying it.

BeOS is a great OS, but it has very very little software support. I'm suprised you can even download it still. Is Palm gonna let Be Inc. still distribute BeOS?

There is a lot of stuff out there, have you ever been to BeBits

And also there is a lot of talk going on right now in the Be world, there is a new leaked 5.1 release and a lot of work going on with Open Beos AKA OBOS. Hopefully the Best OS out there will get even better one way or another.

Can you use BeOS Personal Edition with Windows XP/2000?

Last time I used it was with 98 and it had to boot into dos to run...

also how do you make the personal edition install and boot on its own partition?

Blayze, in order to install to XP, you will need to create a BeOS boot disk since XP doesn't use a "real" DOS. Or install to a real partition and use Bootman to boot the Be or Windows partition. You can add Be to the NT or Xp boot menu but personally I like Bootman better and it is much easier to do.

To install to a real partition you can either make a BeOS PE installation CD from the image.be file and use the boot disk or install PE just like normal from Windows with a boot disk after you use whatever Partion manager you have to create a partition and then install Be to that Partition from the Prsonal Edition running from Windows, go to the installer app, and select from: volume your PE is at, then select to: your partition, this will format or initialize that volume. Then the install should run, after install is over it will ask you if you want to install Bes boot manager, at this time I would do that, it is pretty self explanatory. When everything is done you can go backinto Windows and delete the Personal edition.

The nrmal disclaimers here, make sure you backup and have boot disks for XP and BE before doing this because as always when messing with partitions and the master boot record the possibility is that you can hose everything, just my $.02.

well I installed BeOS under windows into my main hard drive, used the boot disk after restarting, got to the boot screen. It sat there for a while then my computer restarted. tried a bunch of things, safe mode trying to boot from a CD but no luck. So what I am wondering is if BeOS can run under a NTFS file system? If it can't can I repartion my drive with XP on it with having to reformat, with Partion magic or something? Also under the BeOS directory is there a file that I can burn to CD and boot from that, if so what program should I use. Well that was a lot of questions so any answers would be appreciated.

SpYdEr2723 BeOS 5 PE can be installed to an NTFS, as far as the boot hanging up it sounds like either a bad install or incompatible hardware, what are you running? If you have an XP CPU you will need a kernel patch, also without some mods sometimes Be will hang with more than 128mb RAM, try turning off PNP OS in the BIOS also.

Regarding repartitioning with a non-destructive program you could create a partition with as much space as you want for Be with a proggie like Partition Magic or Partition Commander and install Be there, I can give you info on how to do that if you need. You could make another boot disk with c:/beos/CreateBootFloppy.exe substituting c: for whatever drive you have BeOS installed on. Also, yes you can make a boot CD but it isn't easy, if you want to do that LMK, I can help. My guess is that there is some incompatible HW on your box.

OK yeah so I prolly have some harware conflicts. My current setup is
AMD XP 1700
MSI K7T266 Pro2
512 Crucial 2100 Ram
SB Live 5.1
3Com network card
MSI 8831 GeForce 2 Pro
Maxtor 40 gig hd
IBM 60 gig hd
I think that is about it. So if you have a link to the RAM and CPU patch that would be great.

spyder, here is a link to the XP patch, I know nothing about it so I would say of course use it your own risk, lot's of folks are using it with success though, regarding the RAM issue I mentioned, I would first try this patch and then if that works don't worry about the RAM, personally I have always had more than 128mb in my BeOS systems and never had this problem.
