My friend is bringing over his Compaq Presario tonight because the cursor is jumping all over the screen. To me, it sounds like the touchpad has gone up. I do not have much experience with laptops, but here is what I think: I would like to disable the touchpad and attach a USB or PS2 mouse (it has both types of ports). Can I disable the touchpad in the bios or somewhere else? What do you all think about the situation?

On my toshiba I can hold down to function key and hit like F2 to disable my touch pad or do other weird things. I would think a Compaq would be much the same. When he brings it buy look on the function keys. One is likely to have a picture of a touchpad then you can hold down a function key or something simmilar for the Compaq (Mine is between right-ctrl and right-alt key. I usually have to do it when it is in Windows. I have realized that this functionality will only work it the Tosiba background service to interput the keystroke is running. So I would first poke around the BIOS and see if you see anything. It has also been my experience that the keypad is automatically disabled when you bootup with an expernal mouse pluged in. As far as fixing the problem I would try uninstalling the mouse pad drives and installing the newest versions of them.

Good luck and way to be a friend ;)
