Can I connect two computers to a cablemodem with a usb Yspliter

1) that would be dumb. Get a hub (maybe a USB hub, if you don't have NICs?)
2) that will confuse the cable modem and may not give one or the other a connection
3) I don't think cables like that even exist without splicing

If you're set on using the USB connection to the modem, use a nic in each computer and connect with a crossover cable (cheapest method) or get a router and put it between the cable modem and the 2 computers (the most functional method)

Ethernet is...

1) faster
2) more stable
3) just as easy to troubleshoot
4) easier (and faster, potentially) to fix

if your cable modem is only doling out 1 ip address and usb is a single computer interface how do you think its gonna work.
