Can i connect my laptop to my desktop with firewire

i have a laptop and want to be able to transfer files from it to destop or back can i just connect them throught the firewire?
 
Yes, I move files from my laptop to desktop all the time. Huge media files that is, since I don't have a dvd burner on my laptop, it's the only efficient way. Way faster than 100mbps ethernet.
