Can I complain about how fast PCs are today? I want to upgrade, but 0 reason to:

Man, back in the days (10-15 or even 6-7 yrs ago), having a slower PC meant it directly impacted your quality of life in user experience.

Browsers would take a longer time to load...
Just navigating OS windows would be slow on a crap machine...
Whether you were a gamer, a power user, or a soccer mom, having a fast machine mattered.

Remember the hard drive crunch/scratch noise? I don't miss that at all.

Nowadays everything is so fast. I built my mom a $400 budget machine with i3 & 128gig SSD few years ago. That thing still zooms to desktop from a cold start under 10 seconds. Also everything is so streamlined - about 90% of what she does is via a browser (Chrome)- email, news, videos, music, social media, etc.

I myself am still rocking a 4 year old i3-2120, 8 gigs RAM & HD6870. I keep wanting to upgrade, but I realize there's really no point to... spend another $500-600++ for what- so my LR can load pictures bit faster when doing post processing?

Not worth it.

I barely game AAA titles anymore. There are so many rogue-like games that are super fun.

I kind of miss spending money on desktop components + ooh/aahing at the new GPU...

Today having a $400 or a $1200 machine makes very little difference to most people that just use Chrome for most things.

Spend a week on VC&G. You'll feel so inadequate that buying a new card will seem a dire emergency.

Even a majority of OS level features is uncessary.

I'm actually thinking of treating my main tower as a console only. Do most of my computing on "low power" devices, and then RDP to my full tower if I need to play games or anything. Much more power efficient,

I know where you are coming from. My laptop is probably 6-7 years old. I kinda want a new one but I really don't have a need for it especially after I upped the ram and put in a SSD.

8 gigs of ram isn't enough for chorme - you really need at least 16
I don't if this was a jab at Chrome or being serious.

I notice 0 speed issues of any micosecond in the history of my machine while browsing. And that's with messy 50++ tabs when I'm lazy.

Yes.

50 tabs? Pft amateur :colbert: I have 74 open now and thats relatively clean :grimacing:

Well, it's obvious you're not 'actively' using all your 74 tabs- people's mind don't hold that much attention.

The only time I have 50++ is when I'm just too lazy to close prior tabs while browsing pr0n.

I got into buying guns for a while. One advantage guns have over computers is that 10 years from now, you can sell them for about what you paid for them. A ten year old computer generally gets thrown in the trash.

It makes me a little sad that my desktop computer hobby will probably never be the same. Most of the 20 something year olds I know are happy with using their phones as their only computer. If they have a tablet, then they are power users. Trying to use my phone to actually type an email makes me feel sick to my stomach.

a semi serious jab at Chrome for its horrendous memory management

Meh, I think claims of memory management issues on Chrome are overblown.

Chrome sandboxes everything into its own process requiring that much more overhead and also needs to run the multitude of web pages and the associated 50mb assets that websites seem to download these days. Considering that nerds seem to freak out at any reasonable memory management solution ("How DARE Chrome cache a tab requiring a reload, I have 16gb of RAM, NOTHING should ever be cached")

Also, no one develops a browser for the people who run 75 tabs. Why the hell does anyone need 75 active tabs:?

Face it - you have an out of date, old school hobby that doesn't make sense anymore. I miss upgrading, sure, but that's why my hobby's moved on to cars . Just find a new hobby to waste money on.. Model trains?

I dont need anything faster. I do need better peripherals.
I'd like a nicer pen tablet for photo work. Maybe a 3D printer. Perhaps VR when it comes down in price.

I use Chrome at work on this garbage Win 8 machine with 8gb. I have to have 3 windows open (work went to gmail--I hate when work does that--so I need multiple windows open to keep multiple Chrome profiles for various emails) with various tabs each. Chrome locks up about 4 times per day just trying to open a new tab. I'm not sure if it's garbage win8 memory management, Chrome, or just needs more RAM--granted, three shouldn't be a problem with one and two weren't.

I'm going to go download more RAM now, I think. ><

Agreed, using any browser and not closing it can suck memory since it remembers all those previous sites so you can hit the back button as much as you want. I could eat hundreds of MB at work when we had no more than 2GB of RAM fifteen years ago.

buy more RAM. apparently if you have less that 16GB you can't even run indie titles.

I'm certain you'll find people with a sympathetic ear in the General Hardware forum. It's loaded with people likely to talk someone down on an already extremely low end $250 PC build to $100. Very much the opposite of myself.

Yeah i think my main PC is a good 6 years old now or so. Havent thought about upgrading. Does what i need it to do. The times of yearly or every 2 year upgrades for me are over.

When you don't need a faster computer but want to upgrade. Find a new case you like. I build a PC every 4-5 years, but I transfer everything to a new case about once a year.

Let me know when you want to get rid of one of those titans :p

My 5820k could use some more GPU horsepower.
