Can I choose a resolution setting that does not show up on my display properties?

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 running XP SP2. I want to connect it to a widescreen monitor whose native resolution is 1680 x 1050. The only resolution options I see under my Display Properties are 800x600, 1024/768, 1280x1024, and 1400x1050. I don't need a resolution as high as 1680x1050, but I would like to have at least a 16:9 setting so that everything isn't stretched out. Is it possible to do this, or are my resolution options totally limited by my graphics card?

have you plugged in the monitor?

you usually can't select a new resolution until you've plugged in the monitor.

for ex: when i had my CRT plugged in i would only get normal resolutions, but now that i've got a widescreen LCD it gives me widescreen choices

and if that doesn't work there is always powerstrip
