Can I charge a 30GB iPod through USB?

I'm soon to be getting a used iPod (30GB, not sure of the generation), and it doesn't have a charger or cables. I know the mini can be charged through USB, but can a full sized iPod? It' save me the trouble of having to buy a Firewire card and a firewire cable for it. Thanks.

You'll want a firewire card anyways; it's a better connection for the iPod than USB, and a controller will cost the same as what Apple will charge you for a USB cable unfortunately. Throw in the cost of a charger and you'll be well over $80. Firewire charges it fine.

Either way he has to buy a cable for the Ipod as one end is proprietery. I would suggest getting the usb/firewire cable combo. Its 20 bucks and the cheapest firewire card you can find so it can charge via the firewire card.

u'll need to purchase from apple the power adapter or firewire cable for your new stolen iPod. if u don't have firewire ports, just get the adapter - it's more useful anyway since u can then power your new stolen iPod anywhere that has an outlet. but since u don't have any cables, because they don't come included with some stolen iPods, u'll have to buy a cable anyway, so...

whatever the case, i recommend buying the adapter along w/ the cable.

fwiw a store over here in UK I noticed selling ipods was also selling non-apple accessories for them, including usb & firewire cables, power adaptors etc. In white with some reference to ipod design, if thats important. they were a bit expensive for basicallly white cables etc, but not the sort of silly expensive official replacements usually are.

edit: out of curiousity, does ipod transmit a serial code or whatever and maybe allow you to register the ipod itself? I assumed they would have to for the DRM stuff. Wouldnt do anything to stop theives just connecting to their pc's obviously but might at least be a way to stamp your ownership on it, bit like mobile phones though not as effective.

The iPod has a serial number, so you register with that, but I don't believe Apple does much in the way of theft prevention.
