can i change the fan inside my case power supply ?

i just got a new case, fairly good in many respects, but the fan inside the power supply box is quite loud.

can i change the fan inside to a more quiet one ? if yes, should i be aware or cautious with anything specific ? ( other than switching the power off, and getting a fan that fits the current mountings 🙂

has anybody else done this before ?

Yes I have. I once had a Gateway Computer that the fan was starting to get noisey so I pulled the power supply out and seen what size fan it had then ordered it. Mine happen to be a 92mm. It pluged right in.
 
I have found the most common fan size in ATX-spec power supplies is 80mm; I have had to splice the wires on every fan change that I have ever replaced. A little bit of solder and some heat-shrink tubing is all you need (besides the correct sized fan). It is highly recommended that you unplug the power cord and LET THE POWERSUPPLY SIT FOR A FEW HOURS before opening it up. There are capacitors that may take a while to fully discharge.
 
I changed the fan in the power supply that came with my Inwin Q500 case to a Papst fan. The ps took a 92mm x 25mm fan.

To swap the fan I basically did what fast_eddie suggests. It was a really easy swap that took about 20 minutes to do.

My PC is now much quieter.
