<< Scanner bulb is defective >>

<< While the scanner assembly is designed to last for many years of use, the scanner bulb may fail eventually. The unit must be serviced if the scanner bulb or assembly is defective. Replacing the scanner bulb requires completely disassembling the unit. The scanner bulb is not user replaceable because of this and therefore cannot be ordered. Use the links below to contact HP or to locate an authorized service provider to have the unit serviced. There will be a charge for phone support of products that are out of warranty. Many local retailers have signed on as HP Authorized Service Centers. They can provide assistance in getting the unit repaired. >>

so contact 'em... it's a defect!

Whether or not to actually pay the money to ship a scanner to HP or not is up to you. But if you only payed $100 for your scanner, then I would go out and buy a new one for $50 or $75 online. However, if you paid $400 I'd get it replaced :) It'll probably cost $20 of shipping and $40-60 or parts and 'labor'.
